Day 9 Olden - Geiranger - Gausdal (255 Km.)

(in 20 Km.) Nordfjord: Surrounded by a nature full of contrasts: mountains, lakes, glaciers, fjords. Among its highlights Jostedalsbreen landscape, the largest glacier in continental Europe, and Horningdalsvatnet Lake, the deepest on the continent.

(in 50 Km.) Hellesylt: To continue towards Geiranger we must to cross the Fjord by ferry (an hour and a quarter). 10 ferries per day, NOK 30 per person and NOK 64 per car.

Geiranger

Geiranger

(0 Km.) Geiranger: is the fjord by excellence, of 16 kilometers long and 288 deep. The main attractions are their waterfalls (The Seven Sisters, the Bridal Veil and the Suitor) and the abandoned farms of Skagefla and Knivsfla (only by boat). The Geirangerfjord is included in the List of World Heritage of UNESCO since 2005. It is one of the most visited fjords of Norway.

The viewpoint of Flydalsjuvet offers an impressive view and is an excellent point for photography, with a view over Geiranger and Geirangerfjorden with the many cruise boats. Flydalsjuvet is easily reached close to the RV63 road, approx. 4 km from Geiranger centre, heading towards Grotli. We did not get to find it.

Geiranger

Geiranger

Ørneveien (Eagle Road), goes out directly from the Geiranger fjord. It is part of the largest slope of the road up the mountainside from Geiranger to Eidsdal on the rv. 63. The road has 11 hairpin bends from Geirangerfjord until the highest point of that range, at 620 meters above sea level, in Korsmyra. It is essential to stop to see the view over the Geiranger Fjord in Ørnesvingen, the highest point of the hairpin bends.

We continue by the most scenic route on road 63 through Trollstigveien (or Trollstigen), that needs two hours driving. Half-way you can see the water from the Stigfossen (Cascade Road) which falls 320 meters down the mountain side.

Trollstigen

Trollstigen

(in 85 Km.) Andalsnes: It is the gateway to the country of the fjords, here ends the Trollstigveien (The Troll Ladder), one of the most fascinating zigzag road that goes to 852 meters above sea level. Continuing towards Llillehamer we found Trollveggen (Troll wall), the highest rock wall in Europe (900 meters).

(in 100 Km.) We went to sleep near Gausdal.
